Appear more intimidating to opponents Athletes are fierce competitors. Before going into a fight, it’s important for them to know they’ve got an edge over their opponent. Tattoos may look harmless enough (it’s just ink on skin).
It also probably is partly cultural (tattoos are becoming more common) and partly a reflection of the culture/environment in which the fighters grew up. (You don’t see too many investment bankers or rocket scientists covered with tattoos, even today.)
